A podcast by musicologist Maarten Beirens and pianist Daan Vandewalle on the composer and pianist Frederic Rzewski. They discuss his (piano) compositions, Beethoven, and music of the 20th and 21st centuries. Episode #1 was created on the occasion of the release of the CD box The Road, the first recording of Frederic Rzewski’s monumental nine-hour work. Episode #2 focuses on the Nanosonates.
Daan Vandewalle is a pianist and professor of piano at the Royal Conservatoire of Ghent. He studied piano with Claude Coppens at the Royal Conservatoire of Ghent and with Alvin Curran at Mills College in California. Vandewalle has specialised in 20th- and 21st-century music and has built up an international reputation with his performances of contemporary composers such as Charles Ives, Olivier Messiaen, and Alvin Curran.
Maarten Beirens is a lecturer in historical musicology at the University of Amsterdam. He studied musicology at the Catholic University of Leuven (KU Leuven), Belgium, where he also obtained his doctorate with a dissertation on European minimal music.
Frederic Rzewski: The Complete Piano Compositions Project is a collaboration between Daan Vandewalle, Passacaille Records, Concertgebouw Brugge, and TivoliVredenburg Utrecht.
